Reporting Compliance
The filing of timely reports is one of the biggest shortcomings of SBIR participants. If you want to distinguish yourself from the legions of other SBIR winners, there are two simple things you can do: submit quality reports, and submit them on time. Remember: contract research is about more than technical progress; it is also about managing R &D activities. Actions speak louder than words. The agency's perception of your firm's true potential, and (by inference) your prospects of becoming a commercial success, is largely determined by the quality and timeliness (or lack thereof) of your reports. Complying with the reporting requirements associated with your contract is arguably the single-most important thing you can do to significantly enhance your chances of winning another SBIR program (or other follow-on contract) with the same agency. It's easy and it's relatively inexpensive. Mainly, it requires that you diligently monitor (and enforce) reporting deadlines.
